For accountants and bookkeepers

Your sole-trader clients' records, open to you, free

When a client quotes, invoices and photographs receipts in My Job Goblin, they can let you in. You get a login of your own, a list of the clients who have, and one tax year of each client's records at a time. Nothing is copied or sent: you read what the client already keeps.

What you see when a client lets you in

Access is read-only. For each client, one tax year at a time, picked from the years their own history covers:

  • Turnover and allowable expenses as the SA103F boxes add them up (boxes 15 and 17), net profit, money received and money still owed
  • Paid invoices, invoices waiting to be paid, and every expense with its receipt, opened through a link that lasts two minutes
  • CIS withheld on paid invoices, in total and per invoice, where the client's plan includes CIS or money was withheld anyway
  • The settings that change the figures, as they applied during the year: VAT registration, CIS status and accounting basis
  • Each quarterly update for the year: sent, due, late or not started, and for one sent from My Job Goblin, what was sent beside what the records add up to now, flagged where they differ
  • The next update box by box, marked as not sent

How access starts, and how it ends

  1. Invitation

Your client invites you from Settings, Accountant, by email. If you already have an account, you can invite a client from your client list instead.

  2. Joining

You open the link, create an account without a card or sign in, set up two-factor, and name your practice. The link works once, for the address it was sent to, for 14 days.

  3. The level

The client picks Review or Correct. Review is selected unless they change it, whatever you asked for.

  4. While you have access

Every visit is logged and the client can read the log in their Settings.

  5. Ending it

The client ends your access from Settings at any time, without changing a password.

What it does not do yet

Named plainly, with no dates, because a date on a page outlives the plan it came from.

  • No corrections. A client can grant Correct, but changing a category, an SA103F box or a business-use percentage is not built yet
  • No flags or questions sent to the client from inside the app
  • No filing as the client's agent. HMRC's agent authorisation is not built
  • No sign-up without a client's invitation, and no practice-wide settings
  • No bookkeeping ledger, bank feeds or VAT returns. This is a sole trader's job records and their tax figures, not a set of books

Why a login of your own, not your client's

A shared login shares the client's two-factor code, records everything you do as if they did it, and cannot be taken back from one person without changing it for everyone. Your own login keeps who did what separate, and the client can end it on its own.

Making Tax Digital, and who clients ask about software

Most people Making Tax Digital brings in already use an agent, and HMRC's research with agents found 66% now advise or support clients in choosing software, up from 52%.

HMRC lets a client have one main agent and any number of supporting agents, with different things each may do. None of that is decided inside My Job Goblin, which does not file as an agent.

Talk to us about your clients

If some of your sole-trader clients quote and invoice from a phone, email and say how your practice works with them. Your first client can invite you today from Settings, Accountant.

Frequently asked questions

Does it cost the accountant anything?

No. An accountant's account is free whatever plan the client is on, and it never asks for a card.

Can I sign up without a client?

Not yet. An accountant's account starts from an invitation: your client sends one from Settings, Accountant, and you join from the link in the email. Once you have an account you can invite other clients from your client list.

What does the client choose?

Review or Correct, when they invite you or accept your invitation, and Review is selected unless they change it. Today both let you see the records; changing a category or a business-use percentage is not built yet. The client can end your access at any time from their Settings.

Can I file for my client?

No. Filing as their agent, through HMRC's agent authorisation, is not built. When a client sends a quarterly update from My Job Goblin, you see what was sent beside what their records say now.

Is my access logged?

Yes. Opening a client's records is logged, at most once an hour while you look around, and the client can see that log in their Settings.

Why does it insist on two-factor?

An accountant can see several clients' money from one login, so the account asks for an authenticator code before any client's records are shown.
